Single Unit Dose Blister Packs

Blister Packs

The Challenge

The United States Federal Drug Administration will soon require individual unit dose packaging and bar codes on all medications dispensed in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Today, only a small percentage of pharmaceuticals purchased by hospitals are available in individual unit dose packages with relevant information on their labels.

Hospital pharmacies wanted a secure system to repackage and store medications in individual unit doses. The challenge was generating appropriate labeling that did not require expensive equipment to adhere the seal to the blister pack.

The Solution

Avery Dennison developed a pressure-sensitive label in laser sheet and thermal roll form, with adhesive only in the area the comes in contact with the blister pack that includes a protective foil layer in the substrate. Pharmacists simply print the labels with all pertinent information and barcodes and adhere them to flat blister trays of medication for quick and accurate dispensing.

Benefits

  • Saves money by eliminating costly repackaging equipment.
  • Medications are easily identified for inventory management and recalls.
  • Product can be configured with and without foil for up to a six-month shelf life.
  • Dispensing time is reduced, resulting in significant cost savings.
